V
irginia Rothschild was born Virginia De La Puerta Mange in Mexico City in 1943. She attended Catholic primary school where her early artistic skills kept her busy making teacher’s aids - botanical and anatomical posters, which were used for many years at the school.
While in her teens, her father, a civil engineer, was always a strong influence on Virginia, and often took her to the Churrigueresque churches of Mexico. This style of complex design was indelibly imprinted on her consciousness and is represented in her frames. After serving as a teaching assistant in the art department of her preparatory school, she went to the National University in Mexico City, until its closure by the Mexican government due to student unrest.
Fortunately it was temporary, then reopen for normal business.
She then began working, selling her art supplement her income. Later, she had the opportunity to be Vice-consul in Fort Worth, Texas, which enabled her and her only son Joseph to come to the United States. From Fort Worth, they moved to California where she met Norman Rothschild, and then they were happily married in 1988.
Their parnership extended from their marriage into her art. Virginia learned gilding at an early age, and worked for a year under master gilder Rick Glawson. Norman, in turn worked as a shop boy for the great woodcarver, Michael Illions. Virginia was able to turn his woodworking talents toward frame making, and coupled with her expertise in gilding, they produce breathtaking frames for Virginia's paintings.
